A Rocha: working with people...

ABOUT A ROCHA

All around the world, A Rocha is working with communities who want to protect their own environment. Together we are cleaning up salmon streams in Canada; monitoring birds in the meadows and woodlands of East Bohemia; replacing alien plants with native vegetation along the Msunduzi River in South Africa; campaigning to protect the Alvor estuary in Portugal; and protecting newly created Important Bird Areas in the deserts, valleys and mountains of Lebanon.

Some of our teams are based at strategically located field study centres: on the edge of Bannerghatta National Park in India, so that we can reduce the conflict between elephants and villagers; beside the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest in Kenya where we have trained local guides who are committed to protecting their forest’s endangered wildlife; and in the Vallée des Baux in France, where we are working with landowners keen to re-create the wetlands which once characterised the area. Our centres enable us to live as part of the community and to really understand the pressures on the local eco-systems. They also facilitate long-term research.

Other A Rocha teams are making their mark by setting up small groups around their country, getting involved in activities as diverse as providing work parties on New Zealand’s nature reserves, surveying British bumblebees and creating gardens in American cities.

CLIMATE STEWARDS

This is an A Rocha global programme which helps people respond to climate change.  We reduce atmospheric carbon concentrations through planting new forests, restoring degraded forests and protecting threatened forests.
